Food for Change is run in partnership with Cornwall Food Foundation and delivered in 4 locations across the county. The programme is delivered through four practical, sensitive and solution based packages. These are:

Think Food: nutritional awareness; food budgeting; food provenance and sustainability
Grow Food: horticultural skills; planting, cultivation and harvest; and seasons and climate in Cornwall
Cook Food: knife skills; food safety and hygiene; ten survival recipes
Trade Food: making money from food; basic accounting and marketing

Our focus at Newquay Community Orchard is the Grow Food element. If you are unemployed and want to challenge yourself and learn new skills with the aim of getting into work, then please get in touch here.

James’ joined Newquay Community Orchard in 2015 after being unemployed for over 6 months.

James started with community volunteering and wanted to improve his skill set and enhance his CV in order to gain employment as a gardener. James gradually started to grow in confidence and formed some very good friendships with members of the volunteer team. His practical skills improved very quickly and he soon found a seasonal job as a gardener and grounds maintenance in Truro.

James continued to volunteer with us throughout his seasonal role and once his job ended he came back to gain more experience. James undertook employability, CV writing and interview techniques training and started applying for permanent roles.

We assisted James with support in job search as well as providing him with a reference and he was successful in gaining an excellent permanent job at an estate as a gardener in Summer 2016 and is still there doing some excellent work.
